Students on other public relations courses do not despair, CIPR membership for students is frozen at just £35 per year. CEO of the CIPR Jane Wilson says, “The CIPR hugely values its relationships with student members and their universities. Student membership demonstrates an interest in public relations and a commitment to the profession. It also gives the next generation of practitioners access to the full range of benefits currently available to all CIPR members and I hope it will give graduates a head start in their public relations career.” Wilson also says the decision will also attract new students to the field of PR, particularly through the CIPR’s favoured courses. A CIPR member and current student says her membership to the organistaion has helped her to develop professional relationships and explore work placement opportunities. Last year, the PRCA launched the first-ever apprentice scheme for prospective PR professionals in Britain. The apprenticeship programme aimed at attracting young people entering PR as an alternative to attending university. Alongside the CIPR’s university-based initiative, the two organisations are actively responding to criticism about the accessibility of careers in the communications industry. |
