Lobbyists set to enhance professional standards

Lionel_Zetter.JPGWith controversy surrounding the Royal Bank of Scotland for lobbying US politicians with British taxpayer’s money; Lionel Zetter, CIPR board member and former President has stated, the lobbying industry will embrace measures that enhance its professional standards and highlight good ethical practice.

Speaking at the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee hearing, Mr Zetter gave his thoughts to the Committee stating: “Both the consultation document and the questioning from the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee show that there is broad support for a statutory register. There is not, however, any appetite for bureaucratic and expensive regulation.”

Exit for Goldman's 'rococo PR prince' Lucas Van Praag

lucas_van_praag2.jpgLucas van Praag, the global head of corporate communications for banking firm Goldman Sachs, is set to leave his employer of 12 years, with rumours circulating around the Wall Street press pack that his departure was not of his own choosing.

Van Praag joined the banking firm in 2000, his career having included stints at Bankers Trust and a partnership at corporate and financial advisory firm Brunswick Group. He was made a partner in Goldmans in 2006, making him one of the world's highest remunerated comms professionals.

HSBC ranked as most valuable banking brand

HSBC logo_1.jpgDespite the loss in value of European bank brands this year, HSBC has come in at the top of the Brand Finance Banking 500, due to its international focus.
 
The Eurozone sovereign debt crisis took a heavy toll on the European banking sector in 2011, with brand value generated in Europe decreasing by 20%. “It’s an achievement in the last year for bank brand value to even remain static,” comments David Haigh, chief executive of Brand Finance.

New engagement surveys look at commitment and satisfaction

The relationship between a business organisation and its employees is fundamental to growth and success. According to new research by Temkin Group, the Employee Engagement Benchmark study, there is a direct link between employee engagement and the commitment of employees.  

Based on 2,435 American employees, the report revealed that 31% of employees are highly engaged while 23% are completely disengaged in the workplace. Highly engaged employees are considered 30% less likely to take a sick day and are 5.8 times as committed to helping their companies succeed. On the other side of the spectrum, 26% of disengaged employees are likely to look for a new job within six months.

fans.jpgThe German football club Bayern Munich’s latest PR stunt backfired significantly today – but has still resulted in a huge amount of coverage.

The club announced on its Facebook page that they would be unveiling a “new offensive player” at 2pm CET, but when excited fans logged on they were greeted by a marketing app that showed users a picture of their own profiles and a mocked-up No.8 shirt with their surname on the back.

Is 'reputation management' the new 'corporate communications'?

VMABCLS.jpgOn Tuesday 24 January, VMA Group presented the Business Leaders in Communications Study 2012, which the group hopes will establish the first industry benchmarking standard to help corporate communicators with performance management.
 
The study asked 95 senior communicators about role of the communications function in their organisation. 65% of respondents named reputation management as the most important role and 88% listed it as one of the top three roles.

Costa_2.jpgFollowing the sinking of the cruise ship, the Costa Concordia, comms professionals have criticized the crisis communications of Costa Cruises.
 
Criticisms include the delay in producing a spokesperson and the decision to quickly attribute fault to the captain for the incident. Costa Cruises have contested the reports of affected customers being offered a discount on future cruises and have stated that all advertising initiatives have been cancelled.

Government launches lobbying consultation

ukpac.jpgThe Government has launched a consultation into the statutory register of lobbyists, inviting views from the public and industry on how the register will work.
 
The move follows the industry's own attempt to regulate lobbying with the UKPAC. This attempt was deemed a failure by the PRCA, one of the three professional bodies and founders of the UKPAC alongside the CIPR and the APPC. The PRCA withdrew from the UKPAC in December.

Access to the PR industry

prca_logo.jpgThe PRCA Access Commission has written a report for consideration by the body’s Best Practice Committee, making recommendations on how to broaden access to the PR industry.

John Lehal, chair of the Access Commission says in his introduction to the report, “There is a determination on the part of the PRCA to effect lasting change, and the independent commission members were therefore pleased to play their part in making hard-hitting recommendations to move the industry forward.”

Annual reports must acknowledge country and currency risks

The decision to remove the apostrophe from the new Waterstones logo has been met with outrage from social media users and bookselling enthusiasts who claim that the change contradicts the bookseller’s reputation as a provider of quality literature.
 
The high street company has revealed its new logo, which reinstates the Baskerville serif font with a capital W and eliminates the possessive apostrophe that has featured in its name for the past 30 years.

CBI says ‘think big’ with Communications Bill

Neil Bentley of the CBIThe Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has written a new report called ‘Blazing a trail – the UK communications sector in a global economy,’ encouraging the government to be ambitious about what one of the UK’s fastest growing sectors can achieve. The report describes the key part that the telecoms and the digital content sectors should play in rebalancing the economy.

To support the industry in this role, the CBI says that the government must ensure that regulation is suitable for a dynamic industry, encourage competition in the communications sector, maximise export opportunities, and ensure the UK has the infrastructure it needs to compete on a global stage.

The report showcases the best intranets from around the world, chosen from a larger number of nominations. Among the top 10 are the UK based intranets of Logica, a business and technology service company and Everything Everywhere, the joint venture between Orange and T-Mobile in the UK.
